Why available military diet substitutions still work

Even though the Military Diet is deliberately strict, you can still customize it to fit your personal food choice. If you are a vegan, you can substitute the eggs, meat and tuna with either of the following high in protein foods:

  • Nuts
  • Tofu/soya
  • Cottage cheese
  • Lentils
  • Quorn

Food replacements are permitted as options of the military diet substitutions throughout the 3-day military diet for individuals with dietetic limitations. However, servings must maintain the same amount of calories.

A person allergic to peanut can substitute peanut butter with almond butter.

For a vegetarian, you can substitute 1 cup of tune with almonds.

Grapefruit can be substituted with ½ teaspoon of baking soda in a glass full of water. It has similar fat-burning characteristics.

Tuna can be substituted with your preferred fish and if you are not a lover of fish, you can substitute it with any lean protein.

Advocators of the diet advise one to drink hot lemon water as opposed to drinking drinks that have been non-naturally sweetened even though there is no scientific evidence of any harm but strong emphasis is put on using recommended military diet substitutions

The only important thing is the amount of calories, they must remain the same. For example, 1 apple has 75 calories so if you decide to substitute an apple; you have replace it with a fruit that has 75 calories. In addition, food replacements must be from same food groups (e.g. vegetable with vegetable).This basically ensures that you maintain the planned nutritional balance in each meal due to safety in military diet substitutions.
